Gain invaluable experience carrying out your medical elective in Ghana. You may go to a variety of health settings if you wish to.
Our medical elective projects in Ghana have been running for 10 years, and are carried out in licenced health centres and clinics with all the necessary approvals. We work with two (2) Hospital clusters, each comprising a hospital, a polyclinic, and a health centre, with various overseeing bodies (e.g. government, or charity) .The volunteering is managed by our partner NGOs, and two qualified Ghanaian health professionals. You may choose to work in one setting, and one cluster, or both, depending on your length of stay. You can gain experience across the field of medicine, including community health, and outreach.
For more information about the types of placement settings, see the information on our page for qualified medical practitioners volunteering in Ghana
For information about the structure of outreach programmes we offer (e.g. malaria screening) see the information on our Ghana dentistry elective page
What to Expect in Ghana
A warm welcome to begin with, at the airport, where a transfer takes you to your accommodation, where you have 7 days full board. Your accommodation is based within walking distance of one hospital that we work with. The accommodation has good facilities, with potable water supplied, and piped water for washing.
You may arrive for the programme any day, and we ask that you to volunteer four-five (4-5) consecutive days a week.
You will have 2-3 days a week for sight seeing, and we offer options for you to do tours of Ghana by car, either before or at the end of your placement. Self-guided tours of Ghana are difficult due to the lack of public transport, and the degree of local knowledge needed to navigate by the local totros (private taxi come bus vans).
Your participation on this project raises the profile of the hospital and the care and expertise that may be provided. This also increases your knowledge of health issues in developing, and tropical countries.
In addition, your placement with Give A Fig Volunteering (non-profit) in these settings, funds medical responses and programmes that otherwise would not take place, as well as CPD and support for the Ghanaian professionals there.
