Join us at a hospital cluster west of Accra and participate in the mental health outreach programmes that operate from there.
The medical volunteering projects in Ghana that we partner have been running for 10 years, and are carried out in licenced health centres and clinics with all the necessary approvals. On the ground, they are ably managed by two qualified medical professionals. This project can be linked to our University Psychology Placement.
Your elective around two clusters of health provision - each having a hospital., a polyclinic, and a health centre. You will have the option once there of deciding where you’d like to spend your time. The first cluster is based in close proximity to your accommodation. The second cluster, which includes a hospital / health centre, is located in what was a refugee camp, but is now a settled person’s township.
The polyclinics runs extensive outreach programmes targeting:
mental health - both adults and children
non-communicable diseases such as diet induced stroke, diabetes, etc.
The mental health outreach screenings are funded by Give A Fig Volunteering, in coordination with the hospital team.
Where groups of 8 or more elective students who have paid for a four (4) week project, and participate on the same mental health outreach programme, we also fund the dispensary of drugs as prescribed by the local mental health team.
What to Expect in Ghana
A warm welcome to begin with, at the airport, where a transfer takes you to your accommodation, where you have 7 days full board. Your accommodation is based within walking distance of one hospital that we work with. The accommodation has good facilities, with potable water supplied, and piped water for washing.
You may arrive for the programme any day, and we ask that you to volunteer four-five (4-5) consecutive days a week.
Your Free Time
You will have 2-3 days a week for sight seeing, and we offer options for you to do tours of Ghana by car, either before or at the end of your placement. Self-guided tours of Ghana are difficult due to the lack of public transport, and the degree of local knowledge needed to navigate by the local totros (private taxi come bus vans).
Your participation on this project raises the profile of the hospital and the mental health outreach programme in a country that stigmatises mental health issues, and often suggests religious and traditional healing responses to them. (You can find out more about attitudes to mental health on our psychology page).
Your volunteering and elective placement with Give A Fig Volunteering (non-profit), funds medical responses that otherwise would not take place.
