Rural Village Project

Near Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Give A Fig  has been working with villages in Sri Lanka since 2015, and this year round project places you at the heart of local communities, where you'll encounter traditional customs, wildlife, and rural living. At the heart of the village is a temple, and monastery, where we teach the young monks and village children English. Working with the community leaders, we support income growing through developing tourism, and as an NGO are exploring working in organic agriculture and supporting solutions to the human-elephant conflict in the locality. Volunteer groups can support the development of infrastructure through building toilets, and improving community buildings.

About the Rural Village Project

These projects are set in rural areas east of Anuradhapura, amongst paddy fields, lakes, and remnant jungle. Wildlife still abounds, including elephants, jackal, mongoose, crocodile, wild boar, and mouse deer.

People cultivate rice, and during the growing season, cultivators sleep in tree houses at night on elephant, deer and wild pig watch. Traditional crafts are still practiced; women weave baskets and mats, and make clothes, while men make furniture and weave palm leaves. Due to the nature of rural incomes, men and women leave their families and head to urban locations or the middle east seeking more regular incomes.

Your work with these village communities helps to give these people genuine choices in how they develop their incomes, support their families, and manage their environments.

Children and students will perform better in school and their prospects enhanced through their knowledge of English.

100/450 households have no toilet. New toilets diminish health risks.
