Make English come alive for pupils 11-18

Volunteer with Confidence: Project Overview

Project Background: Volunteer and Teach English

Our volunteers range from being 16 - 40 year old youth group members and their leaders, school leavers, undergraduates and graduates wanting to experience the world safely and meaningfully. Some have never taught, some are qualified teachers wanting to gain experience and help others. All have transformed perspectives and memories that last a lifetime. In fact stories of personal growth, CV building, and employment success are great to hear.

This unique project was established 4 years ago by Give A Fig Volunteering in partnership with the government Education Department of Sri Lanka. We are always welcomed in the schools and the children are enthusiastic and respectful, a hallmark of Sri Lankan culture.

With plenty of support, you will be able to prepare speaking and listening lessons and create fun activities to help the students develop their English skills.

Teaching in the monks’ schools, villages, and children’s centres will give you the opportunity to prepare enjoyable activities such as making pipe cleaner models, that introduce children to a range of fun English words that they wouldn’t usually use e.g. ‘bend’ and ‘twist’.

Apply today for your own unforgettable experience and to use your skills to help others.

What to Expect in Sri Lanka

A warm welcome to begin with, at the airport, where a transfer awaits to our HQ, and then at all of the project placements.. If you land a few days early and would like to explore Sri Lanka or volunteer with turtles before joining us (or on leaving us), we can arrange that with you at an additional cost..

Volunteers are asked to arrive at our HQ on Saturday, ready for induction and orientation on Sunday, and to begin the project on Monday morning. You’ll have introduction to teaching and learning in Sri Lanka, the basics of leading the class, and engaging the children through activities.

We’ll also take you out to show you around the area. and the places you’ll be volunteering at.

We will accompany you to your placements until you are comfortable, we will then leave you to enjoy the project, and we’ll be on hand for you.

You will get to the placement by foot, bike (free), public bus (very cheap), or tuk-tuk (cheap). Travel time is included within your volunteering hours.

We will provide you with 4 T-shirts, which you need to wear to the projects.

Your free time is precious, and we will help you to organise days out, trips to the beach, tours, safari’s, and festivals.

We provide spacious accommodation and the food is varied and excellent!

Your typical day

School in Sri Lanka is between 07:00 - 13:30.

We usually arrive at school at 08:00 and leave around 12.00 to have lunch and prepare for afternoon classes that volunteers like to do..

Between 14:00-17:30 you could choose to:

Teach at 2 child monk’s schools (14:00 - 15:30 once or twice a week).

Teach at a college (09:30- 10:30 twice a week)

Teach children supported by local NGOs

We also offer you the opportunity to teach in the village on Saturdays.

Your impact

In Sri Lanka, English is vital for employment choices.

As a volunteer, you will have a life-changing impact on the growth and confidence of the children you teach, and the opportunity to help improve the English skills of their teachers, who will go on to help hundreds more attain the futures they deserve.
