Volunteer with Confidence
Teach Modern Foreign Languages to students 14-18
Volunteers teach German, teach French, or teach Japanese in Schools
Volunteers who’ve joined our teaching in schools projects have ranged from 16 year olds and undergraduate who want to do something they haven’t done before, to those gaining experience for CVs, and fully qualified teachers wanting to teach in a different setting and use their expertise to help others..
This unique project, teaching French, teaching German, or teaching Japanese has been established by Give A Fig Volunteering, enables you to tecah in government schools in Sri Lanka..
You’ll work closely with the class teachers to prepare speaking and listening lessons for up to 12 children in a class.
You can also prepare a range of fun activities through which children can practise language learning, in extra-curricular clubs.
You can also teach English in schools, as well as in schools for monks, children’s centres, in a college, and in villages.
What to expect on arrival in Sri Lanka
Volunteers should arrive at our HQ ready to begin this project at 09:00 on Saturday morning for orientation. This includes an introduction to teaching and learning in Sri Lanka, how pupils respond at different ages, how you can expect the pupils to respond, the basics of leading the class, and how to engage the children through activities,
Over the weekend we will also familiarise you with the culture, area, and the places you’ll be volunteering at.
We will accompany you to your placements when you first go there, and once you are comfortable, we will leave you to enjoy the project.
You will get to the various placements by foot, cycle, public bus (very cheap), or tuk tuk.
We will provide you with 4 T shirts, which you need to wear at the projects.
Free time (journeys to the beach, tours, safaris, festivals) we will help you plan, or even plan for you so that you make the most of your time..
Your accommodation at the Fig and Gecko is spacious and comfortable, and the food varied - and excellent! WiFi is provided, along with wildlife in the garden each day.
Your typical day
School is from 07:30 - 13:30.
We usually arrive about 08:00, and depending on the plan for the day, leave around 12, giving you the opportunity to have lunch, avoid rush hour at the end of the school day, and to get ready to teach other children between 14:00-17:30.
We teach at a school for monks between 14:00 - 15:30 once or twice a week, as well as at 2 children’s centres between 16:00 - 17:00 once a week, at a college twice a week, between 09:30- 10:30, as well as in a village on a Saturday.
You may tailor the programme to your preferences.
As a volunteer, what you do will have a huge impact, the most important being the growth in confidence of the children in speaking German, French, and Japanese as well as in supporting the improvement of the language teachers, each of whom is Sri Lankan.
These Language skills are vital, and will enable these students to gain employment, and university places in a competitive home market.
