pre Dental Programs in Sri Lanka Army Dental Hospitals

pre dental programs and placements with the SL Army dental corps

the SLA welcomes GAFV pre dental students

Gains from joining our pre-dental programme

Our pre-dental programmes are for those aged 16 - 19 who are currently in, or have just completed full time education and are considering a career in dentistry.

Joining our pre-dental placement is an invaluable way to demonstrate to universities your interest in the BDS, as at the army dental hospital you’ll gain first-hand experience of the work of dentists, technicians, and the staff necessary for the efficient and effective running of busy hospital dental units.

Reasons to choose a pre-dental placement with GAFV

Our pre dental program will provide you with a grounding in the work of busy dental hospitals, and all of the work that is entailed in patient management and treatment. The onsite labs will give you knowledge of how bridges, crowns and implants are made. You may well see the process of referral to the OMF ward first hand, or it will be explained to you by the surgeons from the army hospital’s adjoining OMF ward. You will see the work of the orthodontists, restorative dentists, and hygienists, and have Q&As with respected lecturers from the linked university, as well as from their own highly experienced consultants who also lecture in Sri Lanka and overseas. It is to the hospital in Colombo that aspiring consultants come to work with the highly skilled team for their own upskilling.

GAFV pre dental students will see a range of treatments with the SLA dental corps

Following your pre dental placement you will have the background to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios and vice versa. This will foster a more thorough understanding of dental work and patient management, helping you to follow your BDS with greater clarity. At this pre dental stage, you will gain insights into the diverse facets of dentistry, allowing you to make more informed decisions about your career path, as well as highlighting the soft and interpersonal skills necessary to work with others, developed as you learn alongside the highly experienced English speaking dentists, surgeons, and consultants you’ll shadow.

Networking

The pre dental program serves as a networking hub, connecting prospective students with others who are opting for a career in dentistry, as well as the professionals you will meet. Building a network within the dental community during this formative period can open doors to mentorship opportunities, internships, and a support system that is invaluable throughout their dental education and beyond.

Joining our Elective Programs in Year 4 of your BDS

Our pre-dentistry programme therefore will provide you with a view of the practices of dentistry, valuable insight upon which to hang the theory that you will learn in the initial years of your BDS. Indeed, you may wish to return and join us on your 4th Year elective, when again, you will be warmly welcomed and able to carry out your practicums.

Curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
