Placement Description:
The psychology elective programme is based with a group of 8 organisations, with local hospitals, and universities, whose work and success in addressing suicide, and wider community mental health matters since 2006 has become internationally recognized.
Our partner organisation leads the program. establishing well-being clubs in schools, carrying out home visits, follow and supporting mental health patients discharged from hospital. They provide mentoring, counselling, run self-help groups, and raise awareness in the community that support is available and accessible.
The collaboration simplifies mental health information, carries out home visits to those living with a mental illness, provides training and partnerships, providing psycho-social support to psychiatric patients through peer support groups, carrying out community outreaches, and making places and spaces for suicide survivors, people with mental health issues, and their families who are often their primary support, to discuss their experiences. They also deliver online and physical counselling sessions for individuals and groups.
Uganda recognises three types of psychologist: Clinical, and Counselling, which are based within hospitals, as well as Community, based in communities. You will be able to join with practicing psychologists in each field, in their work settings, and gain valuable experience of both the issues they work with, and solutions they are working to.
You will be able to join them across all aspects of their work, and with the different psychology practitioners, in hospitals, and the community.
