pre-Med Volunteering Programs Abroad for age 17+

The Benefits of a Pre-Med Volunteering Placement with GAFV

Our pre-med volunteer abroad programs in Sri Lanka at based at our linked teaching hospital offer aspiring healthcare professionals a safe well-managed pre-med internship from which you will gain a wealth of experience. You could do a pre-med summer internship with us, or even make it part of a Gap Year, staying in Sri Lanka for up to 12 months, or going on to hospitals in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda that we partner with.

Your practical exposure to hospital and clinic medical settings on our pre-medical volunteer placements give you opportunity to support medical professionals, and interact with patients, which enhances your communication skills, empathy, and cultural competence —  all essential skills for delivering quality healthcare.

Our pre-med volunteering programs abroad help you with career clarification, point you to areas of interest you may not have experienced, guiding your educational and career choices more effectively. Pre-med placement volunteering can also demonstrate commitment to the healthcare sector on medical school applications, which is always something of interest to admissions committees, as pre-med volunteering can reflect dedication and a desire to contribute to the community, and of course, give you real life experiences to draw upon at interview.

There is not something you're supposed to do.
There's not something that you should do.
There is only that which you are inspired to do.”

Weeks: 2 - 12 ( + )

Programme Description

You can join us in Anuradhapura for up to 12 weeks (longer if you like) on our pre-med volunteer opportunities, an experience we can tailor for you. As the hospital is able to conduct its work through English, you will find it easy to settle here.

You will do ward rounds with the doctors in the morning, and can then choose to join wards supporting the Drs, and nurses. You can also support the non-clinical roles, as well as admin staff to get a thorough understanding of how hospitals work. You will also be introduced to Ayurvedic medicine, which in Sri Lanka has Drs, nurses, and hospitals funded by the government in the same way as our ‘modern medicine’ is.
We are also able to provide special programmes to introduce you to tropical medicine, psychiatry, and community medicine and health.
This programme runs through the year, and can be a part of a Gap Year too.

You will stay at our HQ, the Fig and Gecko, on Full board 5/7, and B&B 2/7, with 24 hr security, as well as plenty of advice and support to enjoy your stay here.

Impact:

You will gain a wealth of experience at this major teaching hospital, gaining first hand experience of health care in this country. Your time here also supports the learning of the staff in improving their English.
