Change lives as a Volunteer Teacher in Africa and Asia

Volunteer Teaching Overseas

That’s me, Paul, volunteer teaching with a hosepipe in a village in Sri Lanka. We’re learning verbs, vocabulary, and of course, the hokey-cokey! I’ve done, and do, many things with my life, but teaching is perhaps the thing that I find the most rewarding. Perhaps it’s the realisation on learners’ faces they have learnt something (and I teach across school ages through to adults, including nursery), and it’s the realisation I get that that is because of my efforts. And, as they say, and as teachers know, they who teach, learn.

Everywhere we go we have people ask us to provide teachers, and what I have learnt from running the volunteering is that anyone with a mind to can be taught the basics of teaching at the level the people need, and can quickly be delivering meaningful lessons. I have witnessed this with the youth groups that join us, where young people aged 16 stand in front of 30 pupils, not much younger than themselves, and command that class. It’s wonderful to see them achieve so much and to grow so much in the short time they are with us. Volunteering germinates so many seeds in you, and one of those is to know you have the confidence to teach, and be in charge, and that is something that will grow in you always.

We have teaching opportunities in each country we offer placements in, from nursery schools, through school ages, into college, and adults. You could teach in government schools, international schools, private schools, as well as to monks and nuns, and in villages. In each country we can put together a mix-and-match for you, which not only includes types of schools, and ages, but also times, and days to suit you. After all, it is your volunteering.

The purpose of life is to give it away.”
