Youth Work Placements in Africa, Uganda

Youth work placements with Community and School Teams

Location: SW Uganda

Weeks: 2 - 8

Code: Ug_MH_SW

Elective Description:

Your community based social work placement will be with 8 locally organised and coordinated organisations who have been delivering support for suicide prevention, and mental health since 2016. You will support families, youth, and the organisations’ staff to meet the core outcomes of removing the stigma of mental health, and develop the support needed to prevent youth suicide.

The 8 local organisations you will do your youth work placement with began collaborating 15 years ago to stem the tide of youth suicide in their area. They have achieved significant results, and have gone on to be the established mental health and youth work team in their town.

You will join the organisation in their community building, school outreach work, youth suicide prevention, youth services, and youth clubs, and be able to support the counselling they provide, and the various support and well-being groups, youth clubs and youth activity clubs they have established in schools, universities, and their communities.

The project runs wellbeing clubs in schools and universities, which you can join in leading and supporting.

For: social workers, social work trainees, social work students
